Overview

Ratiō ("Ratiō," "we," "us," or "our") builds an AI-powered calorie and macro tracking app for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Ratiō app and website (together, the "Services"), how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have.

By using Ratiō, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services. This policy is written to meet Apple's App Store requirements for privacy disclosures, including our Privacy Nutrition Label and in-app account deletion requirements.

Information we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: name, email address, and password (or Sign in with Apple identifier) when you create an account.
  • Profile & goals data: age, sex, height, starting weight, target weight, activity level, and dietary preferences used to calculate your calorie and macro targets.
  • Food photos: images you capture or upload of meals for AI analysis.
  • Logged data: meals, water intake, exercise/calories burned, weight check-ins, and streak activity you enter manually.
  • Communications: messages you send us for support, feedback, or via the waitlist form.

Information collected automatically

  • Device & usage data: device model, operating system version, app version, language settings, and general usage patterns (e.g. features used, session length).
  • Diagnostic data: crash logs and performance data used to fix bugs and improve stability.
  • Approximate location: if enabled, coarse location (e.g. city-level) may be used to suggest local restaurant menu items. This feature is off by default, and if you turn it on, iOS will prompt you to grant location permission before any location data is collected.

Information from other sources

  • Apple HealthKit (optional): if you choose to connect Apple Health, we may read and write data such as active energy burned, body weight, and dietary energy, strictly to sync your tracking across apps you use.
  • Sign in with Apple: if you use this option, we receive the identifier and email (or private relay email) Apple shares with your consent.

Photos & AI analysis

When you choose to analyze a meal — either by photographing it or by typing a description of what you ate — that image or text is sent securely to Anthropic PBC (United States), the provider of the Claude AI model, by way of Ratiō's own server, so it can identify ingredients, estimate portion sizes, and calculate calories and macronutrients. Here's specifically what happens:

  • We ask you first. Ratiō requests your explicit permission before it sends anything to a third-party AI provider, and shows you what will be sent and who will receive it at that moment. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Profile → Privacy & AI. If you decline, nothing is ever sent, and you can still log every meal by entering the food and its macros yourself.
  • Only the meal itself is sent. The photo or description is the only thing included — not your name, email, age, sex, height, weight, goals, workouts, your other logged meals, or your location.
  • Photos and descriptions are transmitted over encrypted connections (TLS) to our servers and to Anthropic for the sole purpose of nutritional analysis.
  • Not used to train AI models. Under Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service, the photos and descriptions Ratiō sends are not used to train Anthropic's models.
  • We retain food photos so you can review your meal history in the app. You can delete an individual photo at any time from your meal log.
  • We do not use your food photos — or any data derived from them — for marketing, advertising, or use-based data mining, whether by Ratiō or by any third party. Photos are used solely to power the nutrition-analysis feature you initiated, and we do not sell your photos to anyone.
  • Camera and photo library access is requested only when you choose to log a meal, and you can revoke this permission at any time in iOS Settings — Ratiō will simply prompt you to select a photo manually instead.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide core functionality: analyze food photos, calculate calories/macros, and track your progress toward your goals.
  • Personalize your daily calorie and macro targets based on your profile and progress.
  • Maintain, secure, and improve the Services, including debugging and fraud prevention.
  • Communicate with you about your account, product updates, and — only if you opt in — tips and offers.
  • Respond to support requests and feedback.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

Health & fitness data

Ratiō is a health and fitness app, and we treat data like weight, calorie intake, and macro targets as sensitive. In line with Apple's guidelines for health data:

  • We do not use HealthKit data — or disclose it to any third party — for advertising, marketing, or other use-based data mining purposes. We do not sell your health or fitness data to data brokers or advertising networks. HealthKit data is used only to improve your health-management experience within Ratiō.
  • Data synced via HealthKit is used only to power features you've enabled and is never combined with advertising profiles.
  • Health-related data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • You can disconnect Apple Health access at any time from iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
If you are located in California, health data of this kind may also be protected under the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA); if you are in Washington, it may be protected under the My Health My Data Act. See Your Rights & Choices below.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: vendors who process data on our behalf (e.g. cloud hosting, AI/ML inference, customer support tooling, email delivery), bound by contractual confidentiality and data-use restrictions.
  • Legal reasons: if required to comply with a law, regulation, legal process, or valid governmental request.
  • Business transfers: if Ratiō is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred, subject to this policy's protections.
  • With your consent: any other sharing will only happen with your explicit permission.

All third parties who process your data on our behalf, as well as any parent, subsidiary, or affiliated entity with access to your data, are contractually required to provide the same or equal level of protection for your data as described in this policy.

Third-party services

Ratiō relies on a small number of trusted third-party services to operate. Each is contractually limited to using data only to provide their service to us:

Tracking & advertising

Ratiō does not use third-party advertising SDKs to track you across other companies' apps and websites. We do not request App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission because we do not perform cross-app/cross-site tracking for advertising purposes. If this ever changes, we will update this policy and request your permission via the iOS ATT prompt beforehand, as required by Apple.

Data retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active, or as needed to provide the Services. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal, tax, or security purposes (e.g. fraud prevention records), which we retain only as long as necessary for that purpose.

Your rights & choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Delete your data (see Account & Data Deletion below).
  • Export your data in a portable format.
  • Restrict or object to certain processing.
  • Opt out of marketing emails at any time via the unsubscribe link in any email.

Residents of the EU/EEA/UK (GDPR) and California (CCPA/CPRA) have specific statutory rights over their data; we honor these rights for all users regardless of location. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Contact Us. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

Account & data deletion

In compliance with App Store Review Guideline 5.1.1(v), you can permanently delete your Ratiō account and associated data directly in the app:

  1. Open Ratiō and go to Profile.
  2. Tap Settings → Account → Delete Account.
  3. Confirm deletion. This immediately and irreversibly begins deleting your account — it is not simply deactivated or disabled.

Your personal data, food logs, photos, and profile information are permanently deleted from our active systems within 30 days, except where retention is legally required. We will send you a confirmation email once deletion is complete. If you're unable to access the app, you can request deletion by emailing info@ratiohealthapp.com from your account's registered email address.

Children's privacy

Ratiō is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn we have collected data from a child under this age, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided us with personal information should contact us immediately.

Security

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and regular security review of our infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your data using practices appropriate to its sensitivity.

International data transfers

Your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) to protect data transferred internationally.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you via the app or email before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
